'Canal Short Cuts'

Stuart Fisher-1000The first part of the talk will introduce a number of canals proposed for this part of the country, including branches of the Wilts & Berks Canal, most of which were never built. Included will be a copy of a detailed map of one of those suggested branches, which most members will not have seen before, unearthed during research into historical water supplies for the Wilts & Berks.

The rest of the talk will be flying visits to several coast to coast canal schemes further afield, including one abroad. These routes were completed or almost completed and offer some distinctive canals with unusual features.

Stuart has been the editor and publisher of Canoeist for many years. He has written several detailed guidebooks, including Canals of Britain and British River Navigations. The Canal Guide will be published by the time of the lecture and this could, effectively, be it’s launch event. Stuart also contributes to Boating Business and, occasionally, Waterways World.

As a one time public health engineer he has been helping the Engineering Committee to search for water, including the production of a 60 page guide with photographs of all the watercourses reaching the canal between Grove and Melksham, unofficially the Observer's Book of Ditches.
